Chrome’s top tips for reducing your petrol bill

If you’re still driving like it’s 2005 and petrol is £1 a litre, then you need to read on to find out the top 10 ways you can reduce your fuel consumption and save money.

1. Stop driving like you're on a qualifying lap

Hard acceleration and last-minute braking absolutely rinse fuel.

·       Accelerate smoothly

·       Anticipate traffic so you brake less

·       Keep it steady, not stop-start chaos

The reality is that aggressive driving can use up to 30% more fuel. That’s not pennies - that’s tanks.

2. Sort your speed out (especially on motorways)

The faster you go, the more fuel you burn. Simple physics.

·       70mph is your sweet spot

·       80+ mph = noticeably worse fuel economy

·       Cruise control helps on long runs

Getting there only 5 minutes earlier costs you real money.

3. Tyres - boring, but massive impact

·       Underinflated tyres = more resistance = more fuel.

·       Check pressure monthly (not “when it looks flat”)

·       Follow manufacturer recommendations

This is one of the easiest wins. No excuses.

4. Lose the dead weight

Your boot is not a storage unit for umbrellas, sports equipment or anything else!

·       Remove junk you don’t need

·       Roof racks/boxes? Take them off when not in use

·       Extra weight = extra fuel. Every time.

5. Air con: use it properly

·       Air con isn’t evil, but its misuse is.

·       At low speeds just open your windows

·       At higher speeds - use air con (windows create drag)

It’s about balance, not sweating to save 50p.

6. Don’t idle like you’re waiting for a takeaway

·       Engine running = fuel burning.

·       Turn the engine off if you’re stationary for more than a minute

·       Modern cars restart easily - this isn’t the 90s

7. Use the gears properly (or let the car do it)

·       Driving in the wrong gear is a silent fuel killer.

·       Shift up earlier in manuals

·       Don’t sit revving high for no reason

Automatics drive smoothly, not aggressively

8. Plan your journeys (yes, really)

·       Cold starts use more fuel. Short trips are inefficient.

·       Combine trips where possible

·       Avoid peak traffic if you can

·       Sat navs with live traffic = less sitting still

9. Keep your car maintained

·       A poorly maintained car drinks fuel.

·       Regular servicing

·       Clean air filters

·       Correct oil

It’s not just about avoiding breakdowns - it’s about efficiency.

10. Choose your car wisely (next time)

Not helpful today - but worth saying.

·       Smaller engines = lower fuel consumption

·       Hybrids and EVs are becoming more viable

·       Some cars are just thirsty by design
