A guide to buying a used car

Expert advice from Danny at Chrome Motors.

Buying a used car can be a smart and cost-effective decision, but navigating the process requires a bit of know-how. As experienced car dealers, we understand the journey our customers go through and want to make it easier for you. Here’s our guide to ensure you make an informed and confident purchase when buying a used car.

1. Be clear on what you need.

Before you even set foot in a dealership or online, think carefully about what you need from a car. Are you looking for something fuel-efficient for commuting, a spacious SUV for family trips, or a sporty model for weekend drives? Identifying your needs will help narrow down your choices and avoid being swayed by options that don’t suit your lifestyle – or bank balance.

Danny’s advice: make a checklist of your ‘must-have’ features, such as the number of seats, boot space, and tech features like Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats, and parking sensors.

2. Set a realistic budget

When budgeting for a used car, remember to include not only the upfront cost but also running costs such as insurance, road tax, fuel, and routine maintenance. Setting a budget helps ensure you don’t overextend yourself financially.

Danny’s advice: We often recommend setting aside a little extra for the first year of ownership for unexpected expenses. Think of it as a safety net to keep your new (to you) car in tip-top shape.

3. Do your homework

Research is your best friend when it comes to buying a used car. Look up the models you’re interested in and compare them against reviews, reliability ratings, and real-world feedback. You can find those on Car Dealer Reviews. Check market prices on trusted sites to ensure you’re getting a fair deal.

Danny’s advice: If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Be cautious of prices that are significantly lower than the average.

4. Ask for the service history

Any reputable dealer should have a service history available for the cars they sell. A full-service history shows that the car has been well-maintained and can give you confidence that it’s in good condition. Even a partial service history is better than none and can provide insight into how the car was treated by previous owners.

Danny’s advice: Always check for proof of history and use the MOT check facility on the VOSA website. You can also ask to see any additional supporting invoices should they exist – bearing in mind GDPR (personal data) restrictions.

5. Inspect the car thoroughly

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a potential purchase, but taking the time to inspect the car closely is vital. Walk around the car and look for:

- Bodywork: Inspect for rust, dents, and scratches. Minor blemishes are often okay but watch out for inconsistent paint, which could suggest past repairs.

- Tyres: Ensure the tyres have good tread and are evenly worn. Uneven wear could indicate issues with the alignment or suspension.

- Lights and Windows: Check that all lights work and that the windows and windscreen are free from significant cracks or chips.

Danny’s advice: Take your time inspecting the car, ask questions – and bear in mind they are used vehicles so there will be some wear and tear. However, a good dealer will always have a well-presented vehicle.

6. Get behind the wheel

A test drive is one of the most important parts of buying a used car. It allows you to experience how the car handles and feel if there are any issues with driving dynamics, such as:

- Braking: The brakes should be responsive and smooth without any grinding or squeaking.

- Steering and suspension: Listen for unusual noises and ensure the car drives straight without pulling to one side.

- Acceleration and gearbox: The engine should accelerate smoothly, and the gearbox should shift without hesitation.

Danny’s advice: Take your time on the test drive. Try driving at different speeds and on various types of roads to get a full sense of the car’s performance.

7. Review the documents

Legitimate documentation is crucial when buying a used car. At Chrome, we ensure that all paperwork is available for review:

- V5C Logbook: This should be present and show the car’s details and owner history.

- MOT Certificates: A valid MOT is required if the car is more than three years old. Check the car’s MOT history online for any past advisories or failures that could indicate ongoing issues.

- Service records: Review any service stamps and invoices for past work.

Danny’s advice: A transparent dealer will be happy to answer questions about a car’s history and show you all related documents.

8. Prices are well researched

Thanks to the wealth of pricing data available on sites like Car Gurus and Auto Trader, both consumer and dealer now have clear price benchmarks. This has driven some dealers to adopt a fixed price approach. Don’t be disheartened by that approach, the current market empowers you with the tools to assess whether a vehicle is priced as a great, good, fair, or high deal before you visit.

Danny’s advice: Don’t be offended should we insist on a fixed price – we can always justify it. We work diligently to ensure we offer fabulous value and amongst the very best in the UK so you get the most within your budget.

9. Ask about warranties and aftercare

Buying a used car from a reputable dealer often comes with the benefit of a warranty or some form of aftercare. This can be invaluable, especially if you’re concerned about potential issues down the line.

Danny’s advice: We stand by the quality of our cars and offer after-sales support to make sure you’re satisfied with your purchase.

10. Trust your instincts

Finally, trust your gut feeling. If something feels off during your visit or you notice inconsistencies in the car’s story or condition, don’t hesitate to walk away. There are plenty of good used cars out there, and your safety and satisfaction are paramount.

Buying a used car can be a rewarding experience when done right. Armed with this guide and a little patience, you can find a reliable vehicle that fits your budget and lifestyle perfectly.
