Winter Driving - how to stay safe when the temperature drops

The clocks have gone back for winter, and it won’t be long before the really cold weather sets in. When frost starts creeping across your windscreen, it’s a sure sign winters arrived - and with it, icy roads that can catch even the most experienced drivers off guard. Here’s some simple, practical advice from Danny and the team at Chrome Motors to help you stay safe and keep your car in good shape this winter.

1. Preparation is everything

Before you set off, take a few minutes to make sure your car’s ready for the conditions. Clear all ice and frost from your windows, mirrors, and lights - don’t rely on just a small patch on the windscreen. It’s not only unsafe, but also illegal. Make sure your screen wash is winter-grade, your tyres are properly inflated, and you’ve got at least 3mm of tread for decent grip. If you live rurally, you might opt for winter tyres.

2. Drive smooth and steady

On icy or snowy roads, it’s all about gentle inputs. Accelerate slowly, brake softly, and keep your steering smooth. Sudden moves can cause the car to lose traction. Leave a bigger gap than usual between you and the vehicle in front - it takes much longer to stop on slippery surfaces.

3. Ditch the kettle

We’ve all done it – you’re in a hurry and it’s the first thing that comes to mind, but while pouring boiling water on an icy windscreen might seem like a good shortcut, it can cause the glass to crack. Instead, use a proper scraper and de-icer spray. Start your engine, turn on the defroster, and let your car warm up gradually. Or if you have a car app on your phone, you might find you can de-ice the car without setting foot outside – don’t forget to check!

4. Pack a winter kit

It’s worth keeping a few essentials in the boot - a blanket, torch, gloves, phone charger, and maybe a snack or two. If you ever get stuck or delayed, you’ll be glad you did.
